The Role of Religion in Shielding the Elderly from Darkness
In the village where my grandparents lived, I spent my childhood in their house, which was the closest home to the village church. As a child, I often wondered about the purpose of this building. It was a place for delivering religion to the people. This led me to ponder the purpose of religion itself. Religion serves as a code of conduct, guiding those in need of direction. While I recognized the necessity of such a code, I also noted the existence of a common code – the moral code. Yet, people, especially the elderly, seemed to need something more.
Deep within the human spirit, beyond the conscious awareness of most, lies a profound fear of death. Death represents a black dot of darkness, an ever-present reality that terrifies and intimidates many. The ignorance of youth often leaves individuals unprepared to confront death as they age, making them vulnerable to despair and darkness. For these individuals, religion offers comforting narratives that prevent them from succumbing to madness or complete despondency.
Today, religion continues to play a crucial role in protecting the elderly, who often lack the spiritual training to face and overcome darkness. Religion provides a necessary illusion that shields them from the existential dread of death. However, as humanity progresses and more people attain spiritual awareness and maturity, they will be better equipped to confront and prevail over darkness. Such individuals will emerge as leaders, warriors, adaptors, and problem solvers, capable of navigating the challenges of existence with resilience and strength.
Until that time comes, religion remains essential in maintaining an illusion that prevents the weak from falling into darkness. It acts as a safeguard, ensuring that those without the inner resources to combat existential fear are not overwhelmed by it.
